About Me

On Art

In making art I seek to gain a greater understanding of self, and the world I live in. My work centers on themes of displacement, identity and adaptation.

Having immigrated to Canada as an adolescent in mid-nineties, from former Yugoslavia, I feel a sense of dual identity that is not quite at home in either culture. I attempt to embrace this dualism and communicate to others with similar transformative experiences.

On Textiles

I graduated from Capilano College Textile Arts Program in April 2008. It was a transformational experience. I learned so much, and became a part of a close knit and inspiring textile community. My all time favorite processes are: handmade and found object block printing with pigments, silkscreen printing with thickened dyes, anything with indigo, designing in photoshop for Jacquard weaving, weaving of any sort . Silk and wool are my favourite raw materials. Since comprehending how labour intensive and complex weaving is, I have a religion-like reverence for hand made cloth.

Dyeing was another major discovery. It is a challenging amalgam of art and science; a skill that takes time and patience to develop. I still consider myself a novice, even though I have dyed a lot while at Capilano. There has been many a time when I have started out attempting to get a certain colour, and ended up with nothing like, in fact, very far from.

Through the textile medium I feel connected to ancient and contemporary communities of women. In continuing their highly specialized and labor intensive practices in our mechanized, disposable culture I am able to express my politics subversively, through, and with the medium.
